Rev. Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns is a native of Newport, Rhode Island. He is the son of Dr. Frank Guns, Sr. and the late Rev. Quincey C. Guns. He is a product of the Norfolk Public School System. He earned his B.S. degree in Business Administration from Norfolk State University in 1972 after which he served six years as a U.S. Army Infantry Officer.
In 1981, he earned his Masters of Divinity degree from the School of Theology, Virginia Union University graduating Summa Cum Laude. He earned his Doctor of Ministry degree from the School of Religion, Howard University in Washington, D.C. in 1985.
Dr. Guns is the Senior Pastor of the Second Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia, where he has served since June 1983. Second Calvary is a leader in serving the community and in the area of global missions. He currently serves as State Director, Department of Christian Education of the Virginia Baptist State Convention, Inc. Dr. Guns co-founded the Norfolk Pastors’ Coalition in 2014 to lead local Baptist congregations in addressing urban social and economic problems. Dr. Guns also served as the President of the Virginia Baptist State Convention (VBSC) from 1997 to 2001 and twice as the Moderator for the Tidewater-Peninsula Baptist Association (TPBA). Dr. Guns served as a member of the faculty of the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education from 1984-2015. He has traveled extensively to Europe, Israel, Jordan, Turkey, Greece, Asia, and Africa. He has led several short term mission trips to Israel, Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania.
He has written numerous articles for the Christian Education Informer of the Department of Christian Education of the Sunday School Publishing Board, in addition to writing various Sunday School Quarterlies. Dr. Guns serves as Co-Chairman of the Executive Council of Christian Education for the Department of Christian Education Credentials and Accreditation of the Sunday School Publishing Board of the National Baptist Convention, USA. Inc. (NBC). He serves on the Home Mission Board of the NBCUSA, Inc. He served as a co-author the annual Townsend Sunday School Commentary, which is published by the Sunday School Publishing Board, from 2008—2015.
He is the author of three books, Church Financial Management (1997), which is published by Providence House Publishers and Spiritual Leadership: A Practical Guide to Developing Spiritual Leaders in the Church (2000), published by Orman Press, Inc., Introduction to the Bible: An Easy to Read Guide to Its Origin and Purpose (2014), published by Townsend Press, Inc. He has written numerous Bible Studies and other training materials.
He is married to the former Rosetta Harding of Richmond, Virginia. Rosetta is a licensed clinical social worker and works as a School Social Worker for the City of Chesapeake Public Schools. They are the parents of two daughters, Kimberly Guns Wilson and Nicole Patrice Guns, a licensed minister. He and his wife have two granddaughters, Kennedy Nicole and Sydney Rae Cummings.
Rosetta H. Guns, aka “Rosebud” is the only child born to the late Samuel and Martha Harding of Richmond, Virginia. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized by the late Dr. Benjamin W. Robertson, Sr. at Cedar Street Baptist Church.
Lady Guns is married to Dr. Geoffrey V. Guns, Senior Pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church where they have served since 1983. They have two daughters, Kimberly and Nicole and two grand daughters, Kennedy and Sydney.
Academically, Lady Guns earned Bachelor’s (BSW) and Master’s (MSW) degrees from The Ethelyn R. Strong School of Social Work at Norfolk State University. She is a member of several professional organizations. She recently retired from Chesapeake Public Schools after a 30 year career as a School Social Worker. Lady Guns serves on the Board of Directors of the Eastside Community Development Corporation.
She is a member of the illustrious Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is a member The Ministers’ Wives and Widows Alliance of Tidewater and was recognized as the 2012 Ministers’ Wife of the Year.
Among her resume of service is her work on the foreign mission field. Lady Guns has partnered with Pastor Guns on numerous mission trips to Nigeria, Kenya, Israel, Greece and Turkey. She has conducted Women’s Ministry and Pastor’s Wives classes in Nigeria, Kenya, and Tanzania. She has been instrumental in mobilizing women across the country to serve as teachers and mentors for women in Africa and in the United States. Lady Guns has worked with numerous ministries and outreach efforts in the church and community.
Lady Guns currently serves as Co-Elder of the Pastoral Care Ministry, Women’s Ministry Leader and Deaconess. She exercises her spiritual gift of exhortation within the congregation and community. Lady Guns facilitates workshops for local churches on “How to Develop A Women’s Ministry.” Her desire is that women will be empowered to live authentically for the Lord Jesus Christ. Lady Guns loves the Lord, her family, and her church.
